World Day to Combat Desertification 2014:
Land Belongs to the Future - Let’s Climate Proof It
The World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) is observed worldwide on 17 June every year. The theme of this year's WDCD is ecosystem-based adaptation. With the slogan ‘Land Belongs to the Future, Let’s Climate Proof It’, the 2014 WDCD highlights the benefits of mainstreaming sustainable land management policies and practices into our collective response to climate change. Sustainable land management increases both community and ecosystem resilience while improving the human condition particularly in the drylands.
The objectives of the 2014 WDCD are to:
1. Increase the attention given to land and soil within climate change adaptation;
2. Mobilize support for sustainable land management;
3. Call for the inclusion of land and soil and their significance in food security into national climate change adaptation policies.
For tips on activities and further background on the theme, you can download the WDCD Planning Action Guide 2014.
Within the framework of the UNDDD Inter Agency Task Force meetings, the Programme contributed technically to the preparation of the 2014 WDCD resources, media and awareness-raising material. Additionally, two key UNCCD publications were upheld during the event and promoted on the Programme’s website. These are:
|Land-based Adaptation and Resilience: Powered by Nature: The productive land under our care can withstand climate change-related stresses. This latest UNCCD publication explains how land-based adaptation is a practical and affordable solution|
Desertification: The Invisible Frontline: A new publication by the UNCCD which examines desertification as a cause of global conflict and instability and calls for urgent action to support communities in crisis.
